Grade 3 Afrikaans

Second Language Resources

Below is a list of suggested resources for Grade 3 Afrikaans second language learners.

It is recommended that children only begin formally learning a second language in about Grade 3 or when they have mastered reading and writing in their mother tongue.

Until that stage, you should expose your children to Afrikaans informally as much as possible.

Generally, the younger a child is exposed to a second language, the better he is usually able to master it.

From preschool level then, you could begin to teach your children greetings in their second language. You could then progress to counting, naming body parts, telling the time, learning the days of the week and the months of the year. You can also teach them Afrikaans children’s songs, rhymes, poems, games etc.

Ideally, let them play with friends that speak Afrikaans and they will pick it up very quickly and hopefully develop good pronunciation!

Read aloud to them as much as possible, using the recommended story books below as well as Afrikaans books from your library.

Text Books, Workbooks and Readers

Afrikaans Second Language Resources – email for prices.

We recommend a variety of resources for this age level. There is no particular order in which you should use the various products as long as you start at the lowest level and move up chronologically with each series of books.

Ant Books

For beginner Afrikaans learners, start at Vlak 0 (Level 0). Each level consists of two A5 yellow workbooks, plus the 8 green coloured readers, Boeke 1-8.

For Grade 3, you could do Level 0. If your child does Afrikaans 4 days of the week, the set may only take 6 months to complete, so you can use the other resources listed below for the remainder of each year.

In addition to any of the above, you could also use the Lag-Lag series of workbooks.

We have used Ant Books and Leer Afrikaans Lag-Lag books alternatively for each age/grade level.
