Homeschooler at International Maths and Science Olympiad

Brock van der Westhuizen represented South Africa in Singapore in November 2017 at the International Maths and Science Olympiad (IMSO) and received a bronze medal as a 12-year-old – Grade 6.

In 2018 he qualified to represent South Africa for the International Maths Olympiad in Bulgaria by coming joint first in the qualifying competition, but sadly due to shortage of funds, he could not go (about R34 000).

He also qualified to represent South Africa for IMSO again (also as one of the top qualifiers) – this time in China, but sadly funds were still an issue (R28 500 (plus parent traveling fee of R32 500).

His mother received a phone call during the last week (August 2018) where she was asked to please enter Brock in the qualifying round again next year, because the possibility is there that the IMO competition will take place in South Africa and the cost will therefore be a lot less. “Sadly these competitions have lost their sponsorships, and it is now for the parents expense, which puts it out of reach for most average income families,” his mother said.

Brock also came 2nd in Horizon Maths Competition in the Western Cape in June 2018.
