Homeschooled Gymnasts Represent SA at International Region 5 Competition

Gymnastics is a sport in which many homeschoolers excel in at provincial and national level in the various disciplines: Women’s Artistic, Men’s Artistic, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampolining, Tumbling and Aerobic Gymnastics.

Each year there are numerous South African champions and medal-winners among the homeschooling movement.

Top gymnasts are selected to represent South Africa at the annual international Region 5 competition. This competition is for gymnasts that are not yet competing at Junior-Olympic and Olympic level
The purpose of the Region 5 Competition is to prepare up and coming talented youth for international competition, the second to promote and develop the sport in the Southern African Region.

In 2017, three homeschoolers represented South Africa: Mishke Fitzmaurice represented SA for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, level 8 and Abrie Bester for Double-mini trampoline and Ethan Strydom participated in the Euro-trampoline competition held in Windhoek, Namibia.
Mishke achieved first place overall, first on Bar and Beam and 3rd on vault. The Women’s Artistics Gymnastics Level 8 team was first overall.

Abrie Bester placed 4th for double-mini trampoline.

Ethan Strydom won gold for Euro-trampoline and silver for Double-Mini.

In 2016 Kayleigh Erwee was one of the top 6 selected to represent South Africa for Double-mini trampoline in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Ethan Diederichs also represented SA for trampolining and won gold for Euro-trampoline. The SA tea won gold overall for Euro.

In 2014, Lucille Erwee represented South Africa for double-mini at the competition held in Pretoria. The SA team took the gold for double-mini.

The Cape Town contingent of the SA Region 5 gymnastics team at CT airport  in 2016. They joined the rest of the 66 gymnasts and 20 coaches, judges and officials at JHB en route to Harare today! Kayleigh Erwee is the second girl from the left in the back row.
