What we wish we had knownRecently a question was asked on a homeschooling forum by a new homeschooler. She had posted the question in the high school section as she figured that the wisest answers would be from the moms who had walked the homeschooling path the longest. Wendy and Shirley (we), the hosts of www.south-african-homeschool-curriculum.com have a combined homeschooling career of 20 years. In this E-zine we would like to share with you some thoughts that we would like all homeschoolers to consider as they start, or continue, on their homeschooling journeys. AdviceFrom Shirley: “Homeschool is not just about academics and training children, it is character school for parents too! Never think that you will still be using the same materials or curriculum in the years that come. Never buy for years to come as your preferences and style of homeschooling are bound to change as you grow in experience and discover new options. And for those who find it tough going, I would say PERSEVERE ... it only gets better.” From Wendy: “Say no to lots of the extra stuff that take you from home...let your home do the work of showing up the character issues in your kids without feeling like you need to run out the door all the time to this co-op or that sport. Also keep them close to you in all you do. When they are young there is so much heart training to do that when you work around the home together you can do all this as it comes and in an unrushed fashion (because you have chosen to create space in your days). This will stand you in good stead later when you have all of them needing your attention for schoolwork. They will obey you, work well and seek to serve their family. And give yourself lots of grace for those bad days when everyone is being cantankerous; see it all as God using the situations in your home not only to train your children, but you as well.” Free Printables
This month we have added a notebooking page for your children to use when they need to do a book review. We have also added some more Bible copy work pages for your children to use. You can download the worksheets from our free printable page Websites We are often asked why we have such a specific copyright policy on our books and teachers guide. We ask that families who purchase our product do not lend out or resell our books after they have completed their studies. When we try to explain this to parents we often are misunderstood and as such we would like to share an article with parents who consider lending homeschool curriculum and reselling items as an acceptable practice. We apologize in advance in case anyone takes offence, but as we both do not copy, lend or sell second hand items we do feel that we are above reproach in this area. Read more at Betty Borrower vs Barbara Blessing Footprints News We have begun to create the series of project files on the different people groups as well as historical cultural groups, the first of which, about the Bushmen/San we will launch next month. These are designed as stand alone units for parents who want their children to learn more about our Rainbow Nation in a fun, creative way. These project packs will be available to all homeschoolers, not just Footprints clients. They are aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 11 years. Till next month, we wish you every blessing
