In South Africa there is an increasing demand to teach kids money skills and entrepreneurship that needs to be met by schools and parents in South Africa.
Gone are the days where we can say to our children: "Go to school, get a matric and go to university!"
There are far too many unemployed 'varsity graduates for a good job to be a reality for the majority of high school graduates today.
In our homeschooling homes, we have the privilege and ability to not only teach our children the Three R’s but also to prepare them for their future life purposes and teach kids money skills too.
We know that in South Africa there is a 30% unemployment rate. This has a direct impact on all of our children in terms of what they will do when their formal schooling is over.
Consider the following questions:
Is the education kids are receiving today equipping them to meet the challenges of earning a living?
Where did you learn what YOU know about business?
"None of us would place the development of characteristics such as honesty, generosity, respect, compassion, love, friendship and commitment behind the development of financial success. But most of us would agree that, as parents, among the forefront of our wishes for our children is the desire for their financial security."
Financial experts say that immediately after leaving school is the best time to start a business - before one needs to provide security for a spouse and children and possibly pay off a home loan each month. It’s not a bad idea, but why wait until then?
Why not teach our kids money skills and let our kids start learning about business while they are STILL AT HOME?
Why not give them the training ground and opportunities to either succeed or 'mess it up' before they leave the safety of home and have to make it on their own in the 'adult' world?
Like many of our generation, we have learned what we know about business from the 'school of hard knocks' so we decided to start early with our kids' financial education.
In our own homes we have begun teaching our kids money skills at primary school age already. There were times when we thumb-sucked things to teach them these skills like holding entrepreneurs' days or getting them to do ad hoc jobs around the house. But recently, we were delighted to find a product that gives us a structured system to teach kids money skills and build entrepreneurial and business skills.
THE ANSWERBest suited for kids aged 6-14, the
Ka-Ching! Business Parenting Course
is not just about teaching kids money skills, but also about building parent-child relationships. Using it, you and your children will discuss and negotiate the kinds of business concepts so that you will ultimately be building your children’s character and self-confidence, as well as their financial and entrepreneurial skills.
The Ka-Ching Business Parenting course shows a parent how to use a chore system, along with a pocket money system to begin teaching basic accounting skills. They supply instructions which teach detailed budgeting and record-keeping for kids as young as 6. Older children are taught step-by-step to plan, begin and run their own small business ventures. All the time teaching kids money skills and business acumen.
The children are taught to allocate a portion for saving, investing, tithing, contingencies and finally spending. Ka-Ching stresses the importance of giving to others in the form of charity, gifts and time.
The course does not just aim to teach kids money skills, but also stresses the importance of communication and the building of strong family relationships.
It also aims to teach kids numerous other skills which have been identified as important for success, such as brainstorming, thinking skills, problem solving, meeting procedure, public speaking, memory training and more. The goal is to build confident, successful, knowledgeable individuals with business experience BEFORE we send them out into the world to fend for themselves.
All the tools are provided in a very trendy kit and they have newsletters and forums to keep parents encouraged and motivated too. And all this together goes a long way to make sure that your children are not part of the unemployment statistic but rather become adults who know what they want to do with their lives, have the skills to do it and are able to improve the economy of South Africa through job creation for others.
We feel it’s been a good investment in helping us teach kids money skills, maybe you will too.
