Gold Medals for Homeschoolers

Two homeschooled gymnasts were among five gold medalists at the Medalmania gymnastics competition held in Paarl on Saturday, 5 May.

Shanaé Bingham (left) was first with an average score of 10.3 and Kayleigh Erwee (right) came fifth with a score of 9.6 in the Level 2, age 10 and under competition. Both girls are homeschooled and train at the Helderberg Gymnastics Connection in the Strand. The Medalmania competition is held for all gymnasts in Levels 1-3 as a practice for the Boland trials, later in the year. The aim of the competition is to encourage and build confidence in young gymnasts and so all the entrants are awarded either a bronze, silver or gold medal, according to their average scores. Shanaé and Kayleigh were among the top 5 gymnasts in their category, who scored high enough to earn gold medals. In women's artistic gymnastics the girls perform set routines on four apparatus, namely bar, beam, vault and floor.
